New Work “What a Hot Mess” for In The Round 4 Annual Group Show

I’m very excited and a little nervous to show you my new work for this upcoming show, In The Round 4 at Graven Feather Gallery. This is my first attempt at a sculptural piece. I’m satisfied with how they turned out so I’m positive I’ll be making some more in the future.

My “What a Hot Mess!” Series is my commentary on how toxic our judgements are on other people’s appearances (as well as our own) especially when it is expected that one’s personal identity should reflect in their personal style and aesthetic.

Please check out the show opening if you’re in Toronto next Thursday November 3rd at 7pm at Graven Feather Gallery beside Trinity Bellwood’s Park. This is a group show so there will be over 100 “rounds” on display! There will be something for everyone and for a low price of $65!

“What a Hot Mess!” 1 of 3 Oil paint, glass and hot glue on wood panel.

“What a Hot Mess!” 2 of 3 Oil paint, glass and hot glue on wood panel.

“What a Hot Mess!” 3 of 3 Oil paint, glass and hot glue on wood panel.
Here are a couple progress pictures.

First you paint the glass. I could of just painted lines straight down and called them stripes but I wanted to be authentic even if I was only me who would know that it was stripes from a blouse, folds and all. It was important that I painted actual fabric patterns on each pane of glass, from my own closet no less.

Then you break the glass. What followed was hours and hours and hours of sanding down sharp edges while watching Netflix. I only got glass in me twice. Haha
Leave a comment on what you think of my new direction! Don’t worry though I’m still painting ;)

Hope to see you at the show!

Dream Visions – Doom’s Day

Last week I had a strange and vivid dream. In the dream I watched as catastrophe overtook Toronto. As disturbing as that was, I remember feeling even more awful because as that was happening, it was my birthday.

Sometimes the only response is to just draw the thing.

There ya have. Toronto gets totaled by a giant tidal wave. Unlikely but hey it’s my dream.

FYI, my birthday is October 4th. Get a boat. Lol

This week’s Sketchbooks

Trying to figure out what to post every week is making me draw a lot more, even though I hardly have any spare time. I find a way!

I did this sketch a long time ago and hated it. Recently I took a bunch of markers and went over it and it’s much better.

My new sketchbook is small and filled with tracing paper and comes with a grid card.So far I’m enjoying it.

It looks really interesting with the drawings layered up like this.

Back to the Moleskin and my favourite pass time, blind contours.

I had some left over decorative paper that I coloured over and used to cover up a horrible drawing haha.

That’s all for now.

Don’t worry I have plans for other designs in the near future. But for now check out what I have up!

Some Time in the Urban Wilderness

Hello,

It might surprise you to find out that I don’t have a very active social life so when I do find the time to step away from my work I try to make the most of it. For this reason I always try to have some form of note/sketchbook with me at all times.

I was on my way to the other end of city last week for a drink with a friend and I left with enough time to still be prompt even if the TTC was messed up like it usually is. Except on this trip everything was running perfectly and I arrived an hour early. So naturally I chilled at the nearest Starbucks. I was annoyed I didn’t have my sketchbook but I did have my emergency fieldnotes and pen and luckily I had one blank spread left.

Today I journeyed to Queen West to one of favourite galleries Graven Feather Gallery and I thought since I was making the trip I would hang in Trinity Bellwood’s Park and draw. There was a lot of trees, “young people” and dogs. I did see the white squirrel though. That was AWESOME.

There ya go! I’m officially entered-ish. Now to put literally all other artwork on hold until I finish these. This is their forth annual In The Round. The last time I participated was when they first put it on! Here is a link to the works.

Current Projects Fresh Swears

Hello

I have been a very bad blogger. But you have heard this all before haven’t you? I begin with apologies for not posting often enough and how I will get back at it and yada yada yada but no more! Extend your pinkies as I extend mine! I, Jessica Caissie, pinky swear, the most holiest of playground swears that I will post a blog update once a week on Thursdays! As I write this very post it is currently 11:33pm EST on a Thursday, so this counts.

Now that that is out of the way, what have I been up to right? I’m still painting fabric, in fact I’m working on a good-sized one too. I took some progress pics of what I have done so far. I still have a LONG way to go.

Fabric Progress 1.jpg

The once was “White” fabric is going to be very multicoloured. If anyone has been following my Instagram I posted a colour study so expect it to look something like this. It’s going to be nuts! This painting is going to be part 1 of 3 and I expect it will take me way into 2017 to complete all 3 of them. I’ll update here and there on WordPress but expect to see more progress shots on my Instagram.

As usual I cannot just focus on one thing, I will also be participating in the 4th Annual In the Round Show at the Graven Feather Gallery. It’s this fun group show where over 100 artists pay a small fee and receive 3 die cut wooden circles and they create art out of them and they put them all on display. Here is the link if you’re interested in signing up.

Ta ta for now!

Stuff and Cat Drawings

I’ve been working on private commissions lately so I haven’t done any personal work to show you. Good for me but boring for you I’m sure. Although once in a blue moon I open this dusty sketchbook of mine and draw something. Here are a few worth sharing.

Sometimes I draw this guy, not accurately.

Even when I’m not trying not to do well, it still manages to look like him.

My left hand, drawn multiple times.

Finally a cat!
